FASHION BANANAS: “the sh*t is bananas B-A-N-A-N-A-S”

Every morning, most ladies wake up, open their overly stuffed closets and lament: “I have nothing to wear! ” Not Ms. Delmy, a makeup artist by day, and creator of Fashion Bananas, a site where she captures a near-daily snapshot of her clothing choices. She mixes casual staple pieces with chunky heels, graphic print legging, barely there mini-skirts (but appropriate), and the always-present coveted Marc Jacobs bag. This Bronx- native’s style is never over the top; as if she woke up, had a vision and voila the outfit magically appeared… Meet Delmy!

STYLE & SUBSTANCE: What made you start the blog Fashion Bananas?
DELMY: I started out on Chictopia.com and I saw that a couple of girls with similar interests also had a blog sharing their style. I then was inspired to start my own blog. It’s been great ever since.

STYLE & SUBSTANCE: Are you surprised by the popularity of the blog you get so many comments?
DELMY: I am surprised. I remember getting excited over the first 2 comments. I was like yet! I’m really happy with the outcome. I have the best readers ever!

STYLE & SUBSTANCE: Please tell me your favorite designers and why?

DELMY: Oh wow. I have so many, but I would have to say Marc Jacobs because his clothes are so wearable. Not only do they look good on the runway, but also they’re good on my runway. Stella McCartney is another favorite of mine. I am drooling over her latest 2010 resort collection. Every piece is exquisite just like my other favorite Latino designer Oscar De la Renta. He is a genius. His dresses are so beautiful with such delicate details. It’s like old Hollywood glamour. Which is I have decided that my wedding dress will be by him.

STYLE & SUBSTANCE: What are the 5 items that really define your wardrobe?
DELMY: Definitely my J brand dark blue skinny jeans, Express Black boyfriend blazer, American Apparel gray body con skirt, Gap denim boyfriend button down shirt and my navy Marc Jacobs quilted hand bag.

STYLE & SUBSTANCE: Which “title” do you prefer Makeup Maven or Fashionista.
DELMY: I love makeup just as much as I love fashion. I love styling hair, doing makeup, styling people, so how about Superwoman. I can do it all! haha

STYLE & SUBSTANCE: What trends do you think should go away that are not flattering on anyone?
DELMY: UGG Boots, I am so sorry but I just dislike them very much. Also denim on denim is not a trend, but a lot of people are doing it and it’s definitely not a go for me. I mean everyone should wear whatever makes them happy, but you should try and limit what doesn’t work for you. I try.

STYLE & SUBSTANCE: At what age did you catch the fashion/makeup bug?
DELMY: Since I was like 7 years old. I’d watch my mom get ready to go out and go through all her Spanish fashion magazine called Vanidades. I was in love with everything she wore and how beautiful the models looked. No one knew. It was my little secret. By the age of 15 I started buying my own fashion magazines with the allowance my parents gave me. I never had the confidence to pull anything off until I was 17. That’s when I started modeling and became obsessed with makeup.

STYLE & SUBSTANCE: Have you curbed your spending because of the recession? Why or Why not?
DELMY: Actually I haven’t, but I should. Helllooo! I LOVE FASHION. I don’t think I could ever stop. I do however have a great boyfriend that gives me the best goodies.

STYLE & SUBSTANCE: Has your blog made you think of making new career choices or have you gotten new projects because of this?
DELMY: My blog is simply about me sharing my style and inspirational photos and even sometimes about my personal life. It’s sort of like my online diary that I get to share with the world. I enjoy it very much and I don’t expect anything of out it. I am happy with my readers’ comments and emails. I love when they e-mail me asking me what they should wear a certain item it or when they want me to recreate a makeup look. Its so flattering and they bring a smile to my face.

STYLE & SUBSTANCE: In your own words describe what is style and substance?
DELMY: As the years have gone by my style has evolved. Right now I would say my style is a little bit of 80s chic, elegant, funky, elegant, classic. As you see it has no direction. It’s all over the place. Today I am wearing bright floral biker shorts with a denim shirt and tomorrow I could be wearing black suit a la Lagerfeld. It all depends on my mood and what looks good on me. I only buy what works for my curvy body. I am a 5′10″ woman with meat on my bones and proud of it!
